BACKGROUND NOTE

 

Sterlite started its Indian operations in 1997 in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. It operated a copper smelter, a sulfuric acid plant, a phosphoric acid plant, a refinery, and a copper rod plant at Thoothukudi, and two copper rod plants at Silvassa in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. In Thoothukudi, Sterlite had a capacity to produce 400,000 Metric Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) of copper, 1,200,000 MTPA of sulfuric acid, and 220,000 MTPA of phosphoric acid, and a coal-based power plant of 160 MW capacity.
